The Freehand Selection tool is an amazing new tool for creating quick selections... however, Si has also enabled a far more precise method of selection, akin to the Paint Mask selection mode in Photoshop.

Say we want to knock out the mirror in this illustration as a separate layer:

Start by picking Solid Square shape brushes you can find here:

Create a New layer, and stamp a solid square of color on that layer.

Using a two finger tap on the layer menu, adjust Layer Opacity so that you can see the artwork thru the color, like a mask.

Now light up the Transform tool. In this way you can adjust a basic stamped shape to match the overall shape of an underlying element you mean to select.
Then pick a hard edged airbrush and add to this rectangle by painting the same color over additional areas to be selected. Although the Layer opacity might be set very low... it is crucial that the Brush Opacity be set to 100%.

Use small brushes to select very fine detail, and feel free to use erasers to "deselect" or unmask the areas you do not want to select.

Once you get the selection clean and tight, tap the layer and pick the "Select Layer Contents" command. You do not need to dial the layer opacity back to 100%- the Select Layer Contents command ignores the global layer opacity setting and only pays attention to the opacity of the brush that laid down the color.

Now, open the layer menu and turn Off the mask layer, and choose the layer you want the selection to actually affect. Make a 3 finger downward swipe to invoke the selection clip commands, and pick "Cut".
You should see the element you intended disappear cleanly.

While the clip commands are still open, now tap Paste and the cut element is pasted, in place, on a new layer on top.
